COLLEGE
STUDENT PROGRAMS
Spring, Summer and Fall Internships
THE CURRENT JOB MARKET
In today’s competitive job market, employers expect
college students to have completed several internships
by the time they have graduated. A recent university
study found that only 30% of graduating seniors have job
offers before graduation; however, after completing an
internship, that figure rises to 58% and after multiple
internships the figures for employment are even higher.
College Career Centers direct students to pages of
internship listings that are often for juniors and
seniors only and there are many students applying for
the same competitive positions. At the same time,
students must declare a major by sophomore year. Many
students switch majors or transfer without knowing what
their true interests might be. Experiencing the
workplace in one’s intended field is the perfect way to
either confirm or eliminate a career interest and may
often lead a student in a new direction.
Our program is unique because we actually establish the
internship for you. Internship Connection counselors
have Master’s Degrees in counseling or education and
have work experience and contacts in a wide variety of
fields. We match your career goals to workplace mentors
who continually seek out our interns. Let us help you
achieve your career goals by simplifying the steps
needed to secure an internship.
INITIAL COUNSELING MEETING
We meet with the student one time in person, followed up
by email and phone contact. The initial meeting can take
place in our office or on campus and consists of
supportive, informal conversation. Sometimes it is
possible to arrange a phone meeting if the student
cannot meet in person.
We learn about the student’s
career goals and discuss internship possibilities. Some
students know exactly what type of internship they are
looking for while others do not. Students often don’t
realize the workplace options that relate to a specific
career. A student interested in law can actually build a
resume by internships in government working as a
legislative intern or in the civil rights division of a
state agency. A student interested in communications may
enjoy working at a green technology company, conducting
research, learning about new discoveries and writing for
the company blog. We enjoy helping students identify
something that might spark their interest in an academic
area or develop a talent that the student would like to
explore.
DEVELOPING AND REFINING THE RESUME
Next, we work with each student to develop a resume or
enhance one that they may already have. Then, we forward
the student’s resume to targeted companies and
organizations and speak to potential workplace mentors.
We look for placements where the student is not
competing against others to snag a position, but rather
a workplace environment that may be more nurturing. When
the mentor is interested, we put the student in contact
with the mentor to set up an interview.
PREPARING FOR THE WORKPLACE INTERVIEW
Over the phone, using role play, we prepare the student
for their workplace interview. We ask students to
research the worksite and we pose questions to them that
are commonly asked in interviews.
THE INTERNSHIP
The student and mentor establish a work schedule that is
suitable for both parties. During the course of the
internship, we maintain contact with the student and
mentor and provide advice to both concerning the Letter
of Recommendation.
